Joshua Meyrowitz, in his book No Sense of Place (1995), discusses the cultural effects of electronic media. He observes that we can now obtain so much information so much faster and readily than in the past that there is not really any secret, hidden, or private information anymore. Everything is exposed in media. As a result, we have ready access to all kinds of "dirty laundry", private lives of public figures as well as ordinary people. We can use google, tap into public directory, look up people on facebook, linkedin, myspace, etc. and we can get to discover a lot of facts about many people. But are we really interested in these people? Perhaps not, but the excitement of discovery, exposing other people's little dirty secrets, seem to excite us! In Meyrowitz's words, "... Our own age, ..., is fascinated by exposure. Indeed the act of exposure itself now seems to excite us more than the content of the secrets exposed. (p311)" Is that why we have tabloids, gossip columns, reality TV so we can (or at least we think we can) see behind the screens, etc.?
What does this say about blogging? Am I so obsessed to want to expose myself and broadcast what I think in this blog? Are you so obsessed with exposure that you want to read what I write?
